Why it's important to have an engagement shoot

Laying the foundations for your wedding day

Planning a wedding can be quite overwhelming. There’s a lot to do and it’s easy to overlook the importance of your wedding photography. But remember if you want your special day and all those precious moments captured forever, a little planning will go a long way. Having an engagement shoot will lay the foundations down to having the most wonderful wedding day photographs.

Get to know your photographer

First of all, you’ll get to know your photographer. Meeting your photographer and spending time with them before your wedding day enables you to build rapport. Your photographer will be sharing one of the biggest days of your life – so it goes without saying that you need to like them and trust them. Spending this time will enable your photographer to discover your personalities and how you work together as a couple. This is crucial in determining the tone of the wedding photos.

Wedding day rehearsal

Having an engagement shoot breaks down a lot of barriers. So many people are self-conscious in front of the camera and are nervous at the prospect of being the centre of attention on their wedding day. Being nervous is natural but being nervous can make photos look very stilted (not what we want for wedding photographs). An engagement shoot can be considered a wedding day rehearsal shoot. You’ll get a feel for what it will be like on the day with your photographer snapping away. You get a chance to see how certain poses will work and the photographer will be on hand to offer professional tips that will help produce the best wedding day photographs, for instance, lighting and angles.

Image portfolio

The engagement shoot will offer you the opportunity to use the finished photos in the preparation of your wedding. Professionally taken images that can be used for all of your wedding marketing for instance (maybe your invitations or perhaps at the reception itself). Sometimes it’s hard to find photos that you want to use, but with your very own engagement portfolio, you’ll have a good selection of high-quality images on hand and ready.

Determine your style

Of course, when you see your engagement photographs, you will be looking at a preview of how your finished wedding photographs might look. They will allow you to think about how you want to look on your day and then make the necessary arrangements. Dress, makeup, suits etc.

With this in mind brides could trial their wedding make-up for the engagement shoot. If you’re not happy with it and feel it doesn’t look quite right on the images, you’ve got the opportunity to sort it out before the big day itself. Very helpful.

Significant moments

So there you have it. Just a few of the many reasons why having an engagement shoot is so important.

Most significantly perhaps – an engagement shoot documents a very special moment in your lives, a beautiful reminder, yours to keep forever.
